When he woke, the green light was still there, though, barely noticeable surrounded by the daylight that poured in thick through the window. Austin rolled over, rubbing his eyes as if to wipe the light from existence. He looked at the clock, 10:48am. It was the longest he could recall having slept in…he couldn’t remember how long. Hearing the sounds of life downstairs, Austin rose, still in the clothes he had worn the previous day, and hurried out the door, grabbing the video camera on his way out.

Martin heard Austin coming down the stairs and turned to greet him.

“Hey.”

“Hey, man,” Austin replied. “Slept pretty late.” He walked over to the front windows. Police cars still sat in front of the house down the road, but they were parked in different spots than the ones from the night before. New witnesses to the disgruntled chaos.

“I’ve been up a while, woke up when your mom left for work this morning. I pretended to be asleep so she wouldn’t try to question me about last night.” Martin laughed.

Austin took a seat on the couch next to Martin and leaned back, letting out a yawn.

“I was hoping to catch the news, see if there’s any mention of last night.” Martin gestured toward the television, which was in the midst of a vehicle advertisement. “The news should be on at eleven.” He read the time off his phone. “Almost time.”

Austin nodded his head tiredly, still in a daze from having just woken up.

“You want a sandwich?” Austin asked as he stood.

“Sure,” Martin replied.

Austin set the video camera down on the table and started for the kitchen. His stomach growled as he retrieved the ingredients for pb & j sandwiches. Austin was spreading the peanut butter across a slice of bread when Martin called out from the living room.

“You know, I got to thinking a bit ago. That shit last night couldn’t have had anything to do with us. I mean, it just wouldn’t make sense,” Martin said.

Austin waited, spreading the jelly, for Martin to elaborate. But by the time Austin was reentering the living room, Martin still hadn’t said anything further. By the sound of it, by the tone in his words, Martin was trying to convince himself more than he was Austin. There was no real way either of them could be sure whether or not what happened had anything to do with them.

Just as Austin returned to the couch, another commercial ended and the opening of the morning news flashed across the screen.
